Two Stroke vs 4 Stroke
When just getting into motocross or riding bikes in general, this is probably the first question you have: 2-stroke or 4-stroke? Both are very different and depending on what you are looking for in a bike, one may suit your riding style better - whether it's the lightweight, aggressive power of a 2-stroke for quick, technical tracks, or the smooth, consistent torque of a 4-stroke for longer rides and better control. The immediate difference between the two is how many rotations it takes to complete a power cycle. The 2-stroke is a simpler design because it has fewer moving parts, it is easier to work on, and cheaper to work on because of its simple up/down design of the piston. The 4-stroke requires two up/down motions of the piston - intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. The 2-stroke’s power delivery is quick, snappy, and explosive, making the throttle control feel very responsive and immediate. The four-stroke’s power delivery feels smoother and controllable for a more consistent and stable throttle response. One of the pros of the 2-stroke powerband is that it feels strong, but it is narrow, which means you have to keep the bike’s rpms higher on average. This requires more confidence in the rider to ride the bike faster and to keep the rpms high so that the bike stays on the powerband. The four-stroke is more forgiving in this aspect because the powerband is broader and smoother, perfect for beginners and pros alike.
